The movie is set in Spain, year 1944 (World War II) wherein civil war has broken out. A little girl named Ofelia and her sickly mother are on their way to Capitan Vidal's forest headquarters to live with him because the mother is bearing his child. Capitan Vidal is a very sadistic and horrible person who Ofelia and other people fear and despise. Ofelia then encounters fairies and a faun in the forest who reveal that Ofelia is really a princess of another world not born of a human. She is fascinated with the idea that there is another world, a better place, than where she is now.
